OSHA safety signs use signal words and colored
backgrounds to communicate hazard levels.
When making safety signs, you must follow certain design standards. OSHA says there can not be any variation in the signs' design to warn of specific dangers, warnings, cautionsor radiation hazards. ANSI specifies the parameters for the sign design.
Based on ANSI standards safety labels use four signal words that distinguish the severity of the hazard: Danger, Warning, Caution, and Notice. Safety First and Biological Hazard signal words are also used to indicate their respective hazards or potential for hazards.
DANGER Signs
All OSHA compliant danger signs must feature the colors red, black, and white. Danger signs indicate an immediate danger and that special precautions are required.
WARNING Signs
Signs with a "WARNING" header Indicate a hazard that could result in death or serious injury if not avoided.
CAUTION Signs
Caution signs have a yellow background with black printing. They are used to indicate non-life threatening hazards or to caution against unsafe practices.
NOTICE Signs
Notice signs feature a white background with blue print. They address practices not related to personal injury. The safety alert symbol is not used with the "NOTICE" signal word.
SAFETY FIRST Signs
General safety signs (SAFETY FIRST, THINK SAFETY, etc.) feature a green header and black printing on white background and are used to relay general safety information and instructions.
BIOHAZARD Signs
A biological hazard warning sign is used to warn of the actual or potential presence of an infectious agent presenting a risk of death, injury or illness. OHSA compliant labels feature the biological hazard warning symbol.
